Mountain Mission School functions as a full child care facility (Home, Church, School) for children with legitimate needs regardless of the child's race, age, color, creed. This enterprise operates as a non-profit (501 (c) (3) charitable organization, incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of  Virginia.

Who Established the School And When?

In April 1921, the late Sam Hurley and a small group of Christian individuals started the work which later bore the name Mountain Mission School. Dr. Josephus Hopwood assisted in setting up the school’s educational system. The enterprise began because of Jesus and continues with the same Lord. Top

Who Can Place Children At Mountain Mission School?

The child’s legal guardian, whether that person is the child’s parent, relative, or court appointee. Many children find their way to Mountain Mission School by way of a minister’s referral. Top

Are Children Adopted From the School?

No. Besides not ordinarily taking adoptable children into its care and since adoptive service agencies of various sorts exist to help adoptable children, and in order to keep the prime ministry of Mountain Mission School in focus so as not to exceed reasonable cost, management and personnel requirements, Mountain Mission School does not hold a license as an adoption agency.

Mountain Mission School’s ministry lies not with the children who can find homes with loving adoptive parents. This mission exists to help the child whose remaining family wishes to retain firm family ties (something adoption could seriously hamper and which would prevent many needy children from receiving help because of family fear of losing the opportunity to easily reunite the family) or who for other very legitimate reasons do not have opportunity for adoption.
